GiveTrends

Every year we analyze total donations raised from fundraising events across the country. We compare standard donation events with peer-to-peer fundraising events and analyze the difference in number of donors and overall money raised.

The Data Set is compiled from mining RunSignup’s registration and finisher data covering a five-year period to generate transparent statistics, identify trends in the industry, and provide recommendations. It is estimated that the data on RunSignup accounts for 40% of the US endurance market. The data in RunSignup’s 2023 RaceTrends includes more than 75,000 race events and 9.3 million registrations. GiveTrends narrows in on endurance events that have donations enabled.

Donations

High dollar donations bring in real money for your cause. In 2023 16.2% of donation dollars came from donations of more than $500 despite making up just 0.6% of total donations made.

On the other hand, your supporters are most likely to donate small amounts, 40.2% of donations coming in for less than $10.

Takeaways:

  • Set a wide range of donations levels to appeal to as many budgets as possible.
  • Don’t be afraid from listing a high donation level, you never know who will gift a $1,000 donation.

Fundraising and Donation Options

Peer to peer fundraising boosts donation dollars. On average, events with peer to peer fundraising raised 748% more than those with simple donations only.

Events with the donation checkbox enabled increased the amount raised to $3,735 compared to just $986 raised when there is not a donation prompt in checkout.

Takeaways:

  • Always enable the donation checkbox feature to maximize fundraising dollars.
  • Don’t overlook the small stuff. An extra CTA or donation touchpoint may be all you need to turn a website visitor into a supporter.

Peer-to-Peer Fundraising Results

Peer-to-peer fundraising events with a few super engaged fundraisers can see them raise an average of $9,840.65, while events that require everyone to be a fundraiser regardless of their engagement level can raise just $92.37 per fundraiser.

Takeaways:

  • Peer-to-peer fundraising is a powerful way to earn revenue through events. Support your fundraisers during the entire process with FAQ pages, fundraising tool belts, and resources for reaching out to their community.
  • Pick your race settings based on the priorities of the race and understand the tradeoffs of having many fundraisers versus a small number of valuable fundraisers.

Facebook Fundraising

In 2023 Meta announced they would no longer cover payment processing fees for donations and would be switching to Paypal for donation payment processing. Some customers continue to use the integration successfully, but we have seen reduced usage of the integration over the last two years.

Takeaways:

  • Although our data for FB fundraising is based on a small sample size, the ability to connect to a FB fundraiser helps fundraisers reach a wider audience and solicit more donations.
  • Use caution when activating the Facebook fundraising integration due to the payment processing changes made by Facebook.
